The BVIKM has been working hard over the last couple of months and would like to inform you about what it has been working on. The board will be pleased to meet you online on June 1st 2021 from 17 to 18 hours.
Following items will be discussed during the webinar.
- Future developments of the IGGI guide (guidelines on the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases).
- Feedback on the recognition of infectiology and microbiology.
- Working party for funding of infectiology.
- Clinical guidance in the context of COVID-19.
- Launch of the micorbiology-infectiology course (in DUTCH).
- Interdiscipinary symposium on June 24th 2021 [in collaboration with BLVIR, BSM and BIS (see below)].
At 18.10 hours a short (10 minutes) General Assembly will be held (discharge of the accounts 2020).

Interdisciplinary symposium on COVID-19.
The COVID-19 global pandemic has disrupted nearly all aspects of modern life, while long-term psychological, socio-economic and health aspects remain unknown. Four Belgian professional societies [BELVIR (Belgian Society for Virology), BSM (Belgian Society for Microbiology), BIS (Belgian Immunological Society) and BVIKM-SBIMC (Belgian Society for Infectiology and Clinical Microbiology)], with the support of VIB (Flemish Institute for Biotechnology) and FNRS (National Fund for Scientific Research) have joined forces in the organisation of an online, free interdisciplinary symposium COVID-19 on June 24th 2021.
Following sessions will be presented, which will provide the participant with a comprehensive summary of contemporary knowledge on COVID-19.
- Basic virology, host cell interactions and pathological manifestations.
- Therapies and non-pharmaceutical interventions.
- Epidemiology and socio-economic impact.
- Immune respons and vaccination.
As cherry on the cake, Professor Stanley Perlman (University of Iowa, USA) who is an eminent specialist in coronavirus research and who is one of the leading academic voices on SARS-CoV-2, will provide a keynote closing lecture to share his view on current and potential future outbreaks of coronaviruses.
The virtual poster haal, meet-the-speaker sessions and virtual coffee breaks will present plenty of opportunities to connect with each other.
We hope to meet you online (on June 24th) on this excitinfg day of science and progress. Registration is mandatory but free of charge and is possible using this link (with detailed information about the program).
We warmly encourage you to submit your own work on COVID-19 as abstract for oral and poster presentations.
